Morocco coach Ouahbi proving doubters wrong at World Cup

Foxborough, United States: When Mohamed Ouahbi was a student a professor told him he lacked the necessary skills to become a physical education teacher.

In coaching Morocco to the World Cup quarter-finals with an attractive brand of football, Ouahbi has comprehensively proved him wrong.

The 49-year-old Belgium-born coach is yet to lose a match at the tournament and Morocco have an enticing quarter-final date with two-time World Cup winners France in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Thursday. ipltable.lol

"I remember (the professor) very well my first year of studying," Ouahbi told French football magazine Onze Mondial this month.

"A professor told me that in his opinion I was not made for teaching, to giving lessons, or communicating."

Ouahbi has made him eat humble pie ever since.

What he failed to achieve on the pitch as a player he has delivered as a coach, although the bulk of his experience has been in developing young talent.

Until he was named Morocco coach just three months before the World Cup to replace Walid Regragui, he had never coached senior players, apart from one season as assistant coach at storied Belgian club Anderlecht.

He had earned his spurs in coaching under-age players, spending 17 years at Anderlecht where Belgium World Cup stars Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku were among his proteges.

His years of labour with the youngsters paid off when he guided Morocco to the World Under-20 title last year. Morocco beat France on penalties in the semi-finals and overcame Argentina in the final.

Obviously the task on Thursday in facing a vibrant France side led by superstar Kylian Mbappe is a tougher challenge but Ouahbi has gained the confidence of former international players.

"There were question marks over his ability to coach a side full of stars, but what we saw in the friendlies was promising," ex-Morocco international midfielder Abdelaziz Bennij told AFP.

"He arrived at a time when everyone was worried ... it was a huge gamble and he has succeeded."

'Brought added value'

Ouahbi's background with the under-age players will have served him well in dealing with the prodigiously talented 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, a former France Under-21 star who pledged his allegiance to Morocco shortly before the World Cup.

He has also gained praise for adding elan to the team he took over from Regragui.

Ouahbi's predecessor's counter-attacking style, although hugely successful -- Morocco reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals before losing to France and won the controversy-hit Africa Cup of Nations final this year -- had become increasingly unpopular.

His more crowd-pleasing style -- with new Bayern Munich signing Ismael Saibari to the fore -- was on show in the 1-1 draw with Brazil in the group stage and then the last 32 win on penalties over the Netherlands.

"He has imposed his style on two footballing giants, notably against the Netherlands," Moroccan great Aziz Bouderbala told AFP.

"He knew how to control the match and came up with an imaginative offensive strategy without losing the defensive solidity.

"Ouahbi has brought added value, and has not been content to just carry on in the same style as before."

It is not only former players who have been impressed but also those closer to home.

"My father is very proud of me," said Ouahbi, who has three children.

"My papa wears suits the whole time and in the Brussels neighbourhood where they live he is called 'Al Pacino'.

"He is always in a suit and tie but now when I give him my tracksuits he wears those instead!"

Ouahbi, though, is not one for soaking up the praise all for himself -- he prefers a more collegiate approach.

"I try always to include everyone in the project," he told Onze Mondiale.

"I never ever express myself in the first person: I always use 'one' or 'we'.

"The moment I speak in the first person I will put distance between myself and this collective logic.

"It is a staff above all else. Someone who thinks he will succeed alone will not do so... well neither for long nor in the correct manner."

البديل الهداف «لوكاكو»

بدا شبه مقدَّر لروميلو لوكاكو أن يسجل عند دخوله بديلا أمام الولايات المتحدة، بعدما أصبح أول لاعب يهز الشباك في أربع مباريات بكأس العالم كبديل.
رفع رصيده إلى ثمانية أهداف كبديل في النهائيات، معادلا الأرجنتيني دييغو مارادونا والألماني رودي فولر والبرازيلي ريفالدو.

غياب أونانا

تلقى منتخب بلجيكا ضربة موجعة بعد تأكد غياب لاعب الوسط أمادو أونانا عن بقية مشوار البطولة، إثر تعرضه لإصابة خطيرة في الركبة أنهت مشاركته. ويُنتظر أن يُجري الجهاز الفني تعديلات على خط الوسط لتعويض غياب أحد أبرز عناصره قبل المواجهات المقبلة.

خطورة لامين جمال

يُعد الموهوب جناح برشلونة لامين جمال أخطر عناصر المنتخب هجوميا على الورق، غير أن المراهق وصل إلى الولايات المتحدة وهو لا يزال في مرحلة التعافي من إصابة تعرّض لها في نهاية الموسم، ولم يسجل سوى هدف واحد في خمس مباريات.



تحكيم إنجليزي لمباراة إسبانيا وبلجيكا

أعلن الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (فيفا) تعيين طاقم تحكيم إنجليزي لإدارة المواجهة المرتقبة بين إسبانيا وبلجيكا، ضمن منافسات الدور ربع النهائي من كأس العالم 2026، المقامة في الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك وكندا.
وسيُدير المباراة الحكم الإنجليزي مايكل أوليفر، بمساعدة مواطنيه ستيوارت بيرت وجيمس مينوار، في لقاء يُنتظر أن يجمع بين اثنين من أبرز المنتخبات المرشحة للمنافسة على اللقب.

Doha: Qatari clubs have begun preparations for the 2026-27 season with domestic training camps ahead of overseas preseason camps, which will be held in several European countries during July and August.

Following the announcement by the Qatar Stars League of the fixture list for the new season, which kicks off on Aug. 20, clubs now know the dates and venues of their matches, allowing coaching staff to finalize their preseason plans before the start of what is expected to be a long and demanding campaign.

Players and coaching staff reported back to their clubs at the beginning of July and began undergoing comprehensive medical examinations at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, a mandatory procedure designed to assess players' physical and medical readiness.

The examinations include cardiac and respiratory screenings, muscle and joint assessments, as well as fitness, body fat and muscle mass evaluations.

The tests are intended to determine players' condition following the summer break and help coaching staffs tailor individualized training programs based on the results.

Some international players who represented Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will miss the opening phase of preseason after beginning their summer vacations later than their teammates. They are expected to join their clubs' training camps at a later stage.

The overseas camps in Europe represent the most important phase of clubs' preparations ahead of the new season, with teams hoping to begin the campaign in improved form and compete for honors.

Coaches regard the camps as the cornerstone of preseason preparations, with teams undertaking intensive twice-daily training sessions, tactical work and a series of friendly matches that allow technical staffs to evaluate players' performances.

The camps also provide an opportunity for new signings, both domestic and foreign, to integrate with their teammates, while giving younger players a chance to prove themselves ahead of official competition.

The second phase of preseason preparations will begin during the second week of July, with most clubs traveling to Europe. The period is considered crucial for rebuilding fitness levels after the extended offseason and preparing players physically and tactically for the start of the league campaign.

Defending Qatar Stars League champion Al Sadd will hold its training camp in Austria from July 13 to Aug. 8. Al Sailiya will also train in Austria from July 18 to Aug. 7.

Al Arabi will conduct its camp in Estepona, Spain, from July 19 to Aug. 7, while Al Gharafa, the reigning HH the Amir Cup champion, will train in Bratislava, Slovakia, from July 16 to Aug. 3.

Al Shamal has chosen the Netherlands for its training camp, scheduled from July 18 to Aug. 6, during which the club plans to play five friendly matches. Al Wakrah will hold its camp in Rennes, France, from mid-July until the first week of August.

Qatar SC will travel to Murcia, Spain, for a training camp from July 16 to July 31 that will include several warm-up matches. Al Shahania will also train in the Netherlands from July 16 to Aug. 8.

Newly promoted Lusail SC, which secured promotion to the First Division, has selected the Netherlands for its overseas training camp from July 13 to Aug. 1 as it seeks to reach peak condition ahead of the new season.

The remaining clubs are expected to announce details of their overseas camps, training programs and friendly match schedules in the coming days as they continue to finalize their summer transfer business.
