The front office of Bayern Munich is due for two major renewals come 2027. While the rising tide of a winning team can secure the future of managerial positions, the final decisions are expected to be taken by the supervisory board only after the summer transfer window. Former president of Bayern Munich and supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß asked the media to hold their horses until then regarding this matter.
The Supervisory Board
To give a little insight into the functioning of the club, the supervisory board is at the top of the power pyramid at Bayern Munich. It sets the grand vision for the club, taking decisions on the key roles in the club and handling big fee transfers. It consists of 9 members with Herbert Hainer as the President of the club. Uli Hoeneß is the deputy chairman and the honorary president continuing to hold a lot of influence but restraining from flexing it until really needed.
Ultimately, it this board that hires and fires members in the executive board which is briefly explained below.
The Executive Board
Overseen by the supervisory board, the executive board is in charge of day to day affairs of the club’s business. It consists of three roles — the CEO, the board member for sport and the board member for marketing and sales.
The former two are in focus due to their contracts expiring in 2027 and that they have immediate impact on the club’s football.
- The CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen handles all of the club’s day to day business, representing the club in the DFL, club stability and so on.
- Meanwhile, the board member for sport Max Eberl sets the sporting vision for the club. The profile of players that are required to fulfill the vision, player transfer decisions, squad planning and so on.
A little sidenote regarding Christoph Freund and his role with the club. Holding the position of Sporting Director, he is in charge of the daily implementation of the sporting vision. Talent scouting, contract negotiations, youth integration, day-to-day sporting operations and the finer details. During the tenure of Hasan Salihamidžić, both the roles of Eberl and Freund were rolled into one. Now, the club has gone with greater specialization of this position and hired the “RB brothers” to share responsibilities.
How likely are the contract renewals ?
Purely based on performance alone and not considering the interest of the individuals and wage packages, both the renewals should go through. Sporting wise, Bayern has been nearly unstoppable and the locker room is positive under manager Vincent Kompany. Aside from the sporting side of the club, no major scandals or blunders have occurred which when coupled with a healthy financial sheet bodes well for the CEO to hold his position on the executive board.
Having said that, the supervisory board which is in charge of the extensions will hold off until after the summer to make their call. “We cannot make a decision on that before July 1st – that is, one year before the contract expires. We will decide in July or August, after the transfer window has closed. No supervisory board member would tell you otherwise. The same applies, incidentally, to Jan Dreesen, whose contract also expires on June 30, 2027” said Uli Hoeneß in a interview with BILD( as captured by @iMiaSanMia)
Has Eberl earned a renewal ?
This question is for the fans. We know he is not the most popular member of the club, however his position will dictate the sporting direction for the club. Being such a vital position that directly impacts the philosophy of the club that fans strongly identify themselves with, his renewal would be of the most interest in this regard. Has Eberl’s done a good job so far or will any potential extension be riding mostly off of Vincent Kompany and the squad’s efforts? Do let us know your take on whether Eberl should stay beyond 2027 or should Bayern look for a new face in his place ?
