Australian A-League Men
Melbourne City 1 - 3 Melbourne Victory FT
Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata scored two stunning goals as his side Melbourne Victory achieved a 3-1 derby win against local rivals Melbourne City on Saturday.
The 37-year-old audaciously lobbed City goalkeeper Patrick Beach with a first-time effort from about 40 yards on 21 minutes, before Australian striker Max Caputo drew the home side level shortly after.
Mata then produced an equally impressive long-range shot from outside the box in the second half to put Victory back in front, before celebrating wildly with the away fans inside AAMI Park.
His eye-catching performance was then capped with an assist for Brazilian Clarismario Santos, who scored Victory's third goal late on.
United captain Bruno Fernandes dedicated two Instagram stories to Mata, reposting the Spaniard's opening goal and calling him a "special player".
Mata, who spent two-and-a-half years at Chelsea before moving to Old Trafford in 2014, left United in 2022 after eight years.
He played for Turkish side Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe in Japan before joining Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2024-2025 season.
After falling out with Wanderers head coach Alen Stajcic, Mata signed for fellow A-League Men side Melbourne Victory last September.
Victory are fifth in the top-flight table, five points above Melbourne City in seventh.
