WR Wan’Dale Robinson could flourish with the Denver Broncos

One position that many Broncos fans want the team to address this offseason is wide receiver. Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton led the way with multiple big catches, touchdowns, and topped 1,000 yards again, but had some issues with drops later in the year. After that, the team never had a reliable number two or three receiving threat. Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims, and rookie Pat Bryant all had their moments throughout the year, but nobody really provided a consistent WR2 threat.

This has many Broncos fans wanting more from this position. Reports came out that the Broncos nearly signed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs last offseason, so maybe they will dip their toes in the veteran free agent market once again this offseason. If they do, New York Giants wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson could be a player high on their list.

Robinson is a 5-8, 185-pound wide receiver who plays primarily in the slot and is one of the top playmakers available in free agency. He was selected by the New York Giants in the 2nd round of the 2022 NFL Draft with their 42nd overall selection and turned into a high-volume pass-catcher for them over the past two seasons.

Over the past two seasons, Robinson has been targeted 280 times and has had back-to-back seasons of 90+ catches. This past year, he had a breakout season for the Giants and put up career-best numbers. Robinson was targeted 140 times and totaled 92 receptions for 1,014 yards and 4 touchdowns. In his career, he has been targeted 389 times and has caught 268 receptions for 2,465 yards and 9 career touchdown receptions.

Despite poor quarterback play and an offense that lacked consistent playmakers around him, Wan’Dale Robinson turned into a reliable target from the slot position. Now, while he may not be the top playmaker available, Robinson will be a valued high-volume slot receiver in free agency and could flourish in a better situation and possibly be a fit for the Denver Broncos.

Why the Broncos should sign wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson

Wide receiver is a need for the Broncos, and outside of veteran Courtland Sutton, the team does not have a true, consistent WR2 threat. At times, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims, and even rookie Pat Bryant were that guy, but none of them could consistently take over that role. Now, with the Broncos in a Super Bowl window and in need of some more firepower around quarterback Bo Nix, target monster Wan’Dale Robinson could be a perfect fit for this offense.

Bo Nix and Sean Payton love to utilize the quick and short passing game, and that is where Robinson wins. He is quick, shifty, sure-handed, and can win from the slot. He has proven this by being targeted 280 times the past two seasons and would give the Broncos offense a true, consistent threat in the middle of the field. On top of that, Robinson flashed some big-play potential this past season and proved he can be more than a quick-pass specialist.

He is just 25 years old, will be entering the prime of his career, and has the potential to flourish in a better situation. In Denver, he will be in a better offense, surrounded by talent, and most importantly, in a better culture and winning environment. These things could bring out the best in Robinson and make him a potential steal for whoever signs him during free agency.

He also has some loose ties to the Broncos’ offensive coordinator and maybe playcaller, Davis Webb. He was a backup quarterback for the Giants during Robinson’s rookie year. He likely spent a lot of time with him that season, and Webb could be a big believer in Robinson’s potential in the Broncos’ offense. Just something to keep an eye on.

Why the Broncos will not sign wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson

I like Wan’Dale Robinson, but is he really the type of receiver the Denver Broncos need? They have Pat Bryant, who could be that high-volume pass-catching option, Troy Franklin coming off a 700-yard and 6 touchdown season, and Marvin Mims Jr., who just simply makes plays. I am not sure that signing Robinson will make the Broncos’ wide receiver room all that much better. It would raise the floor for sure, but overall, I do not think it will be worth it.

I say this because Robinson will be one of the top free-agent wide receivers available once the Franchise Tags are placed on George Pickens and Alec Pierce. He is going to demand top money, and I don’t think he will be worth it for the Broncos, even though I think he is a good player.

What the Broncos need is someone who can step in and be a true WR1 for them. Robinson is not that guy, and I believe the Broncos could be big fish hunting this offseason. I’d rather let the Broncos continue to develop their young receivers instead of paying big money for someone who will be at most a WR2 for them.

Final Thoughts

If the Broncos signed Wan’Dale Robinson, I would like the move. However, I will not be upset if he signs elsewhere.

I like his game and potential upside with the Broncos. Yes, he is an undersized slot receiver, but he is sure-handed and fits what the Broncos like to do. Payton nearly signed veteran Stefon Diggs last offseason, and Robinson is a similar type of player.

With that said, I am not keen on giving a big contract to an undersized slot receiver even though I really like his game. If it happened, I would quickly get over it, but I’d personally prefer the Broncos to target a true WR1 playmaker who can completely change this offense. I like Robinson, but I do not believe he is that type of player. Again, if he did sign, I would be pretty excited about his potential. That doesn’t make much sense, but that’s where I stand on this potential signing.
