Atanasio Girardot Stadium to Undergo Major Renovation in 2026

Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez confirmed that the Atanasio Girardot Stadium will undergo a historic structural renovation starting in late 2026, forcing local clubs to relocate.

The ambitious project aims to expand capacity to 60,000, renew the roofs, and modernize the infrastructure, with construction set to begin in late July 2026 and finish by December 2027.

Consequently, Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín will be forced to play elsewhere during the 2026 second half and all of 2027. Club officials worry about logistics, as limited-capacity alternatives may struggle to meet Conmebol's requirements for international tournaments.
