Medellin Plans Historic Renovation of Atanasio Girardot Stadium

Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez confirmed a major structural renovation for the Atanasio Girardot Stadium, set to expand capacity to 60,000 and modernize the venue by late 2027.

The ambitious project aims to expand capacity to 60,000 spectators, renew the roofs, and improve infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with completion targeted for December 2027.

This renovation will force Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín to play elsewhere from mid-2026 through 2027. With limited local alternatives like the Polideportivo Sur, the clubs may face logistical challenges, particularly if they advance in international tournaments like the Copa Libertadores.
