Tennessee Faces New QB Era After Aguilar Denied Eligibility

Tennessee football will need a new starting quarterback after Joey Aguilar was denied a sixth year of eligibility, leaving the Vols to choose between George MacIntyre, Faizon Brandon, and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub.

Joey Aguilar’s request for a preliminary injunction was denied by Chancellor Chris Heagerty on Feb. 20, upholding NCAA rules that bar the 24‑year‑old from further college play. Aguilar, who led the SEC with 3,565 passing yards in 2025, will now pursue a professional career and attend the NFL scouting combine on Feb. 27.

With Aguilar out, Tennessee’s spring practice on March 16 will feature a three‑man quarterback competition. George MacIntyre, a former four‑star recruit who has spent a year in Coach Josh Heupel’s system, and five‑star recruit Faizon Brandon, who enrolled in January, will vie for the role, while Colorado transfer Ryan Staub brings experience but a lower ceiling.
