The fourth round of the draft is not typically where teams look for starting quarterbacks, so it is not disappointing that Stetson Bennett has yet proven to take on that role three years after being pick by the Rams. It would be surprising if Bennett makes it a fourth season on the L.A. Rams roster without even being the backup quarterback however.
Bennett once amazed college fans by playing six years in college before it was a common practice. Does he have a fourth year holding a coveted 53-man roster spot without taking a snap in him?
Bennett, who turns 29 during the season in October, has yet to appear in an NFL game.
In that same period of time, players to throw a pass for the Rams besides Matthew Stafford include Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz, Brett Rypien, Tutu Atwell, and Josh Karty.
If he stays another year, Bennett will earn a cool $1.145 million to be L.A.’s emergency third quarterback. As a backup, should he replace Jimmy Garoppolo, this would be a bargain. But as a stowaway, it’d be odd if the Rams allowed this to happen again as if there’s some expectation that Bennett is going to develop into a starter in his 30s.
Will he replace Garoppolo?
Financially, it would be great for the Rams if they thought this was a good idea. Garoppolo is a free agent and he was making a little over $3 million to backup Stafford.
If he doesn’t re-sign and Bennett takes the job, L.A. will save $2 million against the cap.
However, Garoppolo’s departure probably wouldn’t come without Les Snead and Sean McVay bringing in another veteran backup. One who could cost $3 million, if not more. It seems most probable that the team would bring back Garoppolo, although the offseason is another chance for him to seek out one of these potential openings or competitions to prove he does belong as a starter again.
If the Rams do use an early-ish pick on a quarterback, it would only cement that Bennett has no legitimate place on the roster. Then he’s no longer the backup or the future.
So one person definitely not rooting for the team to draft a quarterback is Bennett. And if they do, he’s got to be crossing his fingers that the player doesn’t go earlier than the FIFTH round.
