Canada sets starters for first two WBC games

Canada has lined up its starting pitching plan for the beginning of the World Baseball Classic.

Michael Soroka will get the ball for Canada’s first game on Saturday against Colombia, while Jameson Taillon will start Sunday against Panama, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.

Soroka, from Calgary, signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks this off-season. The six-year MLB veteran has bounced around the majors after he missed the 2021 and 2022 seasons with multiple torn Achilles tendon injuries. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 4.52 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 22 starts split between the Nationals and Cubs in 2025.

Taillon, who was born in Florida to Canadian parents, is set to begin his 10th MLB season and fourth with the Chicago Cubs. A 34-year-old right-hander, Taillon had a 3.68 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 23 starts last season.

Canada will play two pre-tournament games this week. Pitching against the Blue Jays on Tuesday will be Logan Allen, Noah Skirrow, Adam Macko, Indigo Diaz, Antoine Jean, Brock Dykxhoorn and Eric Cerantola. On Wednesday against the Phillies, Cal Quantrill, Jordan Balazovic, Matt Wilkinson, James Paxton, Micah Ashman, Phillippe Aumont and Rob Zastryzny will pitch.
