Patriots make decision on CB Alex Austin ahead of NFL free agency
While the news of Stefon Diggs’ upcoming release dominated headlines, the New England Patriots quietly made another personnel decision.
Cornerback Alex Austin will not be tendered as a restricted free agent and enter the open market next Wednesday. NFL insider Jordan Schultz was first to report the news.
Austin, 24, arrived in the NFL as a seventh-round selection by the Bills in the 2023 draft. After relatively brief stints in Buffalo and Houston, he joined the Patriots in November of his rookie campaign and has since appeared in 29 games with six starts. He registered 31 tackles as well as an interception.
In 2025, Austin appeared in 15 of 21 contests but was on the field for only 11.2% of defensive snaps and none from Week 5 on. He lost his fourth position on the cornerback depth chart to Charles Woods early in the season, missed time on injured reserve with a wrist injury, and was employed exclusively on special teams down the stretch.
Austin entered the offseason as one of five restricted free agents the Patriots had to take care of. In addition to him, quarterback Tommy DeVito, offensive tackle Yasir Durant, defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy and linebacker Jack Gibbens are also RFAs.
The Patriots have until 3:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Mar. 11, to either tender them or let them become unrestricted free agents.
Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane sidelined
Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich’s clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Vincent Kompany confirmed that Harry Kane would be absent after picking up a calf injury.
“Harry Kane is out tomorrow,” said the Belgian. “He took a knock to his calf and hasn’t recovered yet. It’s just a knock. Nothing serious for the foreseeable future, but we might be a day short of him being able to join us. Of course, we would have liked Harry, but these things happen.”
Harry Kane chases Robert Lewandowski’s record
With 30 Bundesliga goals already this season, Kane has surpassed last season’s 26 goal tally and is 11 strikes away from matching Robert Lewandowski’s single-season 41-goal haul, with 10 games remaining.
The Englishman has struck nine goals in his last five games and although needing to average more than a goal per game, Germany’s record champions have a favourable run-in, with games against Mainz, Heidenheim, Wolfsburg and Cologne.

Newspaper claims Allegri wants to bring Modric and Rabiot with him to Real Madrid
Newspapers in Italy claim that Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri would want to bring both Adrien Rabiot and Luka Modric with him to Real Madrid if he were to accept an offer from Florentino Perez in the near future.
Could Allegri take Modric and Rabiot to Real Madrid?
Reports earlier this week claimed that Real Madrid are considering appointing Allegri as their next permanent head coach. The LaLiga giants cut short their agreement with the highly-rated Xabi Alonso and are currently under the interim stewardship of Alvaro Arbeloa, who is unlikely to take on the job on a permanent basis.
According to Tuttosport, Real Madrid and club President Perez have courted Allegri at various stages of the last seven years, dating back to his time with Juventus.
Los Blancos could reportedly be inclined to make another offer for the current Milan boss as they look to turn to a more experienced figure in the Carlo Ancelotti mould for their next head coach.
According to Tuttosport’s front page and reports from Calciomercato.com on Thursday morning, Allegri would want to bring both Rabiot and Modric with him if he were to accept an offer from Real Madrid.

Rabiot, like he has done at Milan, would serve as a trusted midfield reinforcement, while Modric is someone that Allegri would like to bring on in some sort of dressing room role, potentially as an assistant coach should the 40-year-old former Ballon d’Or winner decide to hang up his boots in the near future.
