Milner breaks Premier League appearance record

James Milner has broken the Premier League appearance record in Brighton's game at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The 40-year-old former England midfielder was named in Fabian Hurzeler's starting XI for his 654th Premier League match, beating the record set by Gareth Barry.

Milner equalled the record in the game at Aston Villa, a club he represented from 2008 to 2010, on Wednesday, 11 February.

Brighton boss Hurzeler told BBC Match of the Day that Milner is a "role model on and off the pitch".

Milner made his debut as a 16-year-old for Leeds in 2002 and has also played for Newcastle, Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool in the top flight.

Hurzeler added: "There's no surprise why he's where he is at the moment - because he has such great discipline.

"He has such a great effort every day and he is never satisfied.

"It's a great day for him to show us again why he is the record-holder regarding the Premier League games."

Chris Sutton told Final Score: "Unbelievable. Still playing as an outfield player at 40 is a testament to his dedication and attitude.

"I always remember him being super fit as a youngster, but to have the career he has had, he is a really special player and still contributing."

Sam Parkin, a team-mate of Milner's while on loan at Swindon in 2003, added: "He came to Swindon on loan, we played about a dozen occasions together.

"He was too fit - he didn't join in with the APRE [strength training] with the League One lads at that time. He was so professional and so driven. He was a tricky winger in those days."

Milner has not played regularly since joining Brighton in 2023 and only three of his 16 Premier League appearances have been from the start.

Barry, who was Milner's team-mate at Villa and City for 134 of their 653 games, has held the record since September 2017.

Milner, who won 61 caps for England, won the Premier League title twice with Manchester City and once with Liverpool.

He also won the FA Cup and the League Cup with both clubs - plus the Champions League with the Reds.

Milner's contract runs until the end of the season.

Coach Nick Nurse reacts to Sixers bringing in 2 new guards on deals

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers made a few moves to add to the roster as they converted Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker from two-way deals to standard ones. Those moves opened up the opportunity for the front office to add more with two more two-way slots opening up.

The Sixers brought in two new guards as Tyrese Martin and Dalen Terry were signed to join MarJon Beauchamp as the three players on two-way deals for Philadelphia.

Martin spent the previous two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets as he looks to find his niche now with the Sixers under the guidance of coach Nick Nurse.

"Obviously, I haven’t seen hardly any of him yet," Nurse began on Martin. "We do feel like he is a decent combo guard. We would probably push him more to the 1 just because we got a lot of combo guards. I’d like to see him—I think he’s got a good IQ and a good head on his shoulders. He’s got pretty good size. A really good feel for the game."

Martin was averaging 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while shooting 33.6% from deep in 37 games with the Nets before being waived. He is a physical and athletic guard and one has to wonder what his fit will be going forward.

"Just wanna see how that all fits in with us," Nurse added on Martin. "I think it’s an interesting one. I don’t know when we’ll get to see all that. We got a ton of games coming at us, but we’re gonna try to get him on the court and get him on the practice floor and all those things as soon as we can."

Then there's Terry. The former No. 18 pick of the 2022 draft couldn't quite find his footing with the Chicago Bulls in four seasons averaging only 3.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in 204 games, but Nurse is complimentary of his game.

"Just kind of a big guard or a wing," Nurse said of Terry. "Got some pop and athleticism to him. Hangs his hat on the defensive end. Let’s see where that shows up and then I think we gotta figure out where his offense fits in this league and what he can do there and see if our player development guys can get to work on him and help him grow that part of his game, but has a reputation. Very good defensively and is long and athletic and we’re just gonna try to continue to upgrade in those ways, I think, with some youth and athleticism and versatility."

Part two of our annual review of the Miami Dolphins’ impending free agents comes to us this morning with a look at another player with an expiring contract. The Dolphins have 35 players slotted to hit free agency when the new league year begins on March 13. The list does not include the salary cap releases the team has made, such as wide receiver Tyreek Hill, guard James Daniels, or wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, or cuts they are expected to make, such as linebacker Bradley Chubb.

We started this year’s version of the series with cornerback Kader Kohou. We stay on the defense today with linebacker Quinton Bell, a former seventh-round draft pick by the then-Oakland Raiders. Primarily a practice squad player in hit time with the Dolphins, Bell has shown flashes in training camp, but has he done enough to stick with Miami for another season?

As I did yesterday, I ended this article with an embed from X, giving you a chance to vote on what you think the Dolphins should do. Feel free to also head into the comments to discuss Miami’s options with Bell.

Expiring Contract

1 year, $1.5 million

2025 Review

Bell returned to the Dolphins in May 2025 after playing in all 17 games, including three starts, for the Dolphins during the 2024 season. He brings energy and attack to the defense, but he found himself buried on the depth chart. He was among the final roster cuts, then re-signed to the practice squad. Ultimately, he played in seven games during the year, recording eight defensive tackle and a fumble recovery. He is a good special-teams player when he is available to play.

2026 Outlook

New head coach Jeff Hafley works out of a 4-3 base defense, with not a lot of blitzing expected for the team. That could see Bell move into a defensive end role, or Miami could look to transition him into a depth weakside linebacker. Whatever defensive role he lands, Bell is likely to continue to be a key special teams player.

Walk, Tag, or Re-Sign?

Projected franchise tag (linebacker): $28.2 million (via OverTheCap.com)

Re-sign. Bell is not expensive and provides solid depth. This feels like a 50/50 choice. If the coaches decide they want to get a younger player into a rotational role and fill the special teams requirements, that could make sense as well.
