Bettman visits Calgary for World Cup venue

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is visiting Calgary on Monday to evaluate Scotia Place as a potential venue for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

Bettman will be joined by Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly for meetings with ownership and a tour of the arena construction site. Calgary is among the North American cities on the shortlist to host the tournament, with venue announcements expected in two weeks. Scotia Place, slated to open in fall 2027 at a cost of $1.2 billion, could showcase international hockey supremacy in February 2028.

Calgary is pitching a festival-style atmosphere with concerts, fan events, and community celebrations around the World Cup. The city's proposal aims to create an economic impact similar to the Olympics while leveraging the modern production value of an NHL-run event.
