The New York Giants are releasing veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke, a move expected to save $9 million against the salary cap. The decision comes as the team undergoes a defensive overhaul with new coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

Okereke, who led the team with 78 tackles last season and was a team captain, turns 30 in July. Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen have other potential cuts planned to free up space for free agency and the NFL Draft.
