Former NRL premiership winner Chad Townsend was treated by a doctor during a 'scary' ordeal while flying to Las Vegas for the NRL season opener.

The 35-year-old Cronulla Sharks premiership winner was en route to Sin City to watch the Cowboys vs Knights and Bulldogs vs Dragons matches scheduled for Sunday.

Townsend required medical attention mid-flight, with the situation described as frightening by those on board.
